Xylose was first isolated in forests such as birch, and it is now commonly found in a number of wood materials such as straw, pecans, and corn cobs. It is also found in berries, spinach, and broccoli. It is known that the body itself forms some xylose, but this value is very small.

The structure of xylose
Although xylose is commonly known as wood sugar, it is defined as an aldopentose sugar, which is essentially a monosaccharide containing five carbon atoms and an aldehyde functional group. It has the chemical formula HOCH2 (CH (Oh))3CHO and can take several structures, but this will depend on the surrounding conditions. These structures include D-xylose (or the right-handed form), which occurs endogenously in living things, for example, and L-xylose (the left-handed form), which is synthesized.

Xylose metabolism
A derivative of xylose is xylitol, which is usually consumed as a sugar substitute. When xylitol is consumed, the body cannot use it and so it moves through the GI tract without being fully metabolized.

The use of xylose
After much research, xylose has since been considered safe to use as a sugar substitute. Xylitol is often found in many products that fight tooth decay, such as toothpastes, mouthwash, and even sugar-free products. Recent research has also shown that xylitol improves some of the existing decay and even helps dental health, as it reduces the ability of bacteria to stick to teeth. Xylitol does not contain carbohydrates, which means that it can be used in many dietary products. In addition, it also has a high fiber content, which further reduces the number of calories and helps reduce weight and the digestive system in humans . Because of the increase in type 2 diabetes, an alternative source of sugar is needed. Although white sugar can increase the body's insulin levels, when xylitol, on the other hand, is injected into the body, it does not increase insulin levels, thus acting as an excellent alternative.
